Better transport for Sydney's North West
The NSW Governments North West Rail Link community Newletter has recently announced that...
The North West Rail Link will better deliver better public transport for people in Sydney's North West.
It will be the most siginificant expansion of Sydney's rail network in decades and will be designed and operated with the customer at the centre of its philosophy.
The new line will:
- Provide the 300,000 people living in the North West with easy access to trains to Epping, Macquarie Park, Chatswood, St Leonards, North Sydney and beyond to the CBD;
- Help shift people from road to rail;
- Reduce bus and road congestion and improve amenity - in the Hills and the Sydney CBD;
- Provide an integrated and affordable transport system that links existing communities and new growth areas in North West Sydney with jobs and services;
- Deliver significant travel time savings for people travelling from many parts of the North West area to Macquarie Park and on to the CBD; and
- Provide a major increase in public transport to the Macquarie Park and Macquarie University area.
The North West Rail Link will connect directly into the North West Growth Centre, predicted to house an additional 394,000 people within the next 25 years.
The Project
The North West Rail Link is a major project by world standards and will require the longest rail tunnelling work ever undertaken in Sydney.
Infrastructure work will include:
- A connection with the Epping-Chatswood Rail Link and will run underground between Epping, Cheltenham, and beyond to Kellyville;
- 4 new underground suburban railway stations;
- 2 new above ground suburban stations;
- Bus, pedestrian and cycling access facilities at all stations, with approximately 3,000 park and ride spaces proposed at Cherrybrook, Hills Centro and Kellyville Stations;
- Approximately 15 km of twin tunnels from Epping to Kellyville;
- Approximately 7.5 km of other railway construction work;
- A stabling yard at Tallawong Road, Rouse Hill; and
- Ancillary infrastructure such as power supply systems and rail operating and safety systems.
