A lower carbon footprint and lower cost of living!
The New Rouse Hill is being developed so that a great lifestyle is achievable with a reasonable cost of living and much smaller carbon footprint than traditional suburbs in northwest Sydney.
Taking up the challenge to cut energy and water consumption means you can bank substantial cost of living savings, cut your carbon footprint substantially and improve your personal health.....it’s like a financial plan, gym membership and environmental program rolled into one!
It's not hard to target electricity, gas and water savings of $1500 - $2500 per annum*.
Lose a car, pick up a bike and save more than $7,000 per annum**.
The combination of initiatives we are putting in place have lots of benefits if you work on them.

These include:
- Taking up the challenge to save energy, water and vehicle costs as part of a 'financial plan' – it is possible to reduce your annual cost of living by around $10,000 (see the table below) – think of where that money can be better used!
- Taking up the challenge to cut your carbon footprint – in total The New Rouse Hill initiatives can cut your carbon footprint in key areas by around 50% compared to the average household in Baulkham Hills.
- Taking up the challenge to drive less around The New Rouse Hill by choosing to walk or ride a bike for many short distance trips – less cost, less carbon but also great personal health benefits! Research indicates that the personal health benefits alone can be worth $1,000 per year in saved medical costs.
The following graph sets out the current electricity, gas and water consumption, and car ownership of the average Hills Shire moderate sized household - the same for existing The New Rouse Hill moderate sized households is then set out followed by our target consumption pattern for The New Rouse Hill representing about 50% savings.

The cost of living and carbon footprint outcomes of these savings are set out in the following tables. |

It’s hard to think of many areas in your budget where you can ‘earn’ this amount of money around the house each year!

* Energy and water costs have been estimated for 2015/16 using available information from IPART, available consumption information for the local area and assuming price increases continue at the long term trend - it should be recognised that these outcomes are not certain and that individual household consumption patterns vary widely ** Car ownership costs have been adapted from RACQ published total cost of car ownership (see the RACQ website for more information) and assume savings gained from 'not owning' a small four cylinder car with low usage.
